A first rate stylistic Maine seascape (possibly Mt. Desert Island) with dynamic rolling and crashing waves below a passing storm. The picture's plane is broken down into shapes - the cloud formations, rocks and waves - the artist had a strong sense and geometry and used it as an armature to build the composition and breakdown detail. The spiderweb-like waves are phenomenal.
The composition (2:1 ratio) and overall feel relates to many works by Edward Moran (American, 1829-1901) and the early works of Thomas Chambers.
Condition: Excellent. Painting has been professionally relined and cleaned. Minor in-painting here and there.
