French & Indian War (Siege of Louisbourg) Powder Horn
Circa: 1758
Size: 9" OAL x 3 1/8" D
Carved "PAUL PENDEXTER HIS HORN AT LUESBURG 1758." Louisbourg horns of the French & Indian war are quite scarce. Additionally with foliate designs derivative of the Abenaki double curve, it appears to have been carved by an indigenous MicMac or Penobscot native.
Current research has found the following: from, SACO VALLEY SETTLEMENTS & FAMILIES; "Paul [Pendexter]; m. Hannah March, in Biddeford [ME]; no other information."
Condition: The horn maintains a natural and beautiful surface and color. The absent spout below the deeply scalloped gouged border is an ancient loss, as evidenced by the smooth wear and color consistent with the age of the horn.
