This is really a remarkable piece of American folk art. This large (life sized) portrait bust of a young man is carved from the solid of a large ash burl. The carver was clearly an experienced carver, as the proportions, shape of the head and details of the face are accurately and sensitively rendered.

American Folk Art Horn Beaker
Circa: 1780
Size: 5" x 3" D
Carved in the manner of an American powder horn (not like English hunting horn cups) the beaker is carved with a rhyming verse, a sqaure rigged sailing ship, a lorilei, a fish and a great swan all framed and encircled with beautiful floral motifs. Verse reads:
"Around this Horn in sculptured letters see
A friendly token Jerrold received from me
And when the Harvest toils shall Sweat the brow
May its Cheering draughts fast speed the plow
Add fresh Vigour to the manly nerves
And bring industry what its toil deserves"

French & Indian War (Siege of Louisbourg) Powder Horn

Carved "PAUL PENDEXTER HIS HORN AT LUESBURG 1758." Louisbourg horns of the French & Indian war are quite scarce. Additionally with foliate designs derivative of the Abenaki double curve, it appears to have been carved by an indigenous MicMac or Penobscot native. $2,400.00
