New York State Iron Handled Ash Burl Scoop / Dipper
Circa: 1740-1760
Size: 29" OAL; (bowl) 10"D x 7"H
This is quite an extraordinary object. The maker was clearly a competent woodworker and blacksmith-combining skilled iron work with a terrifically hewn ash burl. The bowl is remarkably deep in proportion and maintains a deep dark chocolate brown color. The interior displays deep and long gouge marks from the hewing process, the high-points of which have been burnished over time. Surface is untouched with a fine patina. The iron handle is set-in and secured with forged nuts, bolts and washers. The end of the iron handle tapers and terminates to a point.

Condition: Excellent.
